Arcos da Ribeira
Arcos da Ribeira is a public space in Porto’s São Nicolau parish, beside the Ribeira tunnel and near Dom Luís Bridge. Narrow streets such as Travessa do Barredo and Rua Cima do Muro preserve the layout of the medieval riverside quarter, while old stone arches mark former warehouses and passageways.
A ceramic panel by painter and architect Fernando Lanhas stands near the tunnel entrance. Known as “À Cidade,” the composition contains 875 tiles and measures about seven metres wide by five metres high. The work was assembled between December 2014 and February 2015, then given to Porto by Lanhas’s heirs. An iron lift also links the riverside with Barredo, connecting the lower and upper city while opening views towards the river, bridges and Gaia quay.
The panel’s scale makes the setting memorable: 875 individual tiles occupy a wall beside the tunnel, with the lift and old arches close by.
