Siège du Parti Communiste français stands in Paris as the headquarters of the French Communist Party and an example of modernist architecture. Oscar Niemeyer designed the building while living in France in exile from Brazil. Its concrete structure uses broad curves, a free façade and a curtain wall designed by Jean Prouvé. Above the main volume, a dome gives the composition its most recognisable shape.
Construction began in 1968, while the external dome reached completion only in 1980. Niemeyer described that rounded form as representing a pregnant woman. For him, architecture should follow political struggle, giving the curves an explicitly political intention. The design follows Le Corbusier’s five principles of modern architecture. These include a free façade and a curtain wall designed by Jean Prouvé. Classified as a monument historique in 2007, the headquarters has hosted fashion shows and film shoots. The building has hosted cultural events alongside its political function.
