L’Histoire stands in Paris at the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, within the Louvre’s sculpture collection. Antoine-François Gérard carved this stone work in 1809, giving the site a neoclassical presence. The statue rises about 2.9 metres, measures 2.5 metres across, and reaches 2.8 metres in depth.
Gérard was born in Paris in 1760 and studied sculpture under Jean Guillaume Moitte. He won the Prix de Rome in 1789, then received commissions for landmarks including the Arc de Triomphe de l’Étoile and the Palais Royal. Historical and allegorical themes guide the work, linking its subject to Gérard’s wider practice in stone. Its setting also places one neoclassical sculpture within the Louvre’s broader passage from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance and modern times.
The most immediate detail is its scale: nearly three metres of carved stone beside the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel.
