Hôtel Le Charron
Hôtel Le Charron stands on the northern bank of Île Saint-Louis, in Paris’s fourth arrondissement. This hôtel particulier was built from 1637 to 1640 by architect Sébastien Bruand for finance intendant Jean Charron.
The building later became a studio for sculptor Yvonne Serruys and writer Pierre Mille, beginning in 1912. Painter Émile Bernard died here in 1941, while volcanologist Haroun Tazieff lived here until his death. Restoration followed in 1979 and 1980 under the Bâtiments de France, with Laurent Daum as architect, before heritage protection arrived in 1988.
Photographer Eugène Atget included the building in his record of old Paris. Its connection with artists, writers and scientists gives the stone façade a distinctly human history.
