Hôtel de Saint-Aignan
Hôtel de Saint-Aignan stands in Paris’s Marais district, a historic Jewish quarter where an elegant townhouse houses the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaïsme. The museum traces Jewish life from the Middle Ages through the twentieth century. Its galleries bring together religious objects, manuscripts, archives, photographs and artworks from Europe and North Africa. Marc Chagall and Amedeo Modigliani appear alongside medieval gravestones, Moroccan ceremonial dress and Italian sacred art.
The collection grew from a 1985 project supported by the City of Paris and France’s Ministry of Culture. The museum opened in 1998. Its rooms combine historical periods, themes and geography to explore Jewish identity, artistic expression and communal life. During the Vichy roundups of 1942, several Jewish residents of the building were arrested and deported. That history gives the courtyard and galleries a particular gravity, while an Italian Holy Ark from the fifteenth century offers one of the museum’s most memorable details.
