Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a Discalced Carmelite convent in Palma’s historic centre, between the Rambla, dels Horts and de les Tereses. Its church stands beside a small courtyard, where a divided façade rises towards two hexagonal corner towers. Geometric Mannerist patterns decorate the entrance pilasters, while a figure of Saint Teresa crowns the structure above.
Leonor Ortiz founded the convent in 1613, beginning its religious life from her own house and garden. Construction of the convent buildings started in 1616, followed by the church in 1648. Dedicated to Saint Teresa of Jesus, the church follows a Latin cross plan with a long nave and square presbytery. A barrel vault covers the interior, while an eight-segment dome and central lantern mark the crossing.
The main altarpiece, made by Mateu Joan in 1700, stands behind the altar as the church’s focal point. Square lattice windows line the tribunes, creating privacy around the galleries. Beyond the church, a rectangular cloister with lowered arches accompanies a chapter house covered by a ribbed vault.
