Sant Antoniet
Sant Antoniet stands in Palma as a former convent and hospital, founded in 1230 by the Canons Regular of Saint Anthony. Religious and medical work met here, especially in care for ergotism, known locally as the “fire of Saint Anthony”. The surviving church and cloister show Baroque design shaped by Italian influences, with the church arranged around an elliptical plan.
The convent expanded in 1362, while a major renovation around 1729 added the cloister. After the old church was demolished in 1756, construction began again in 1757, and the replacement church was blessed in 1768. Its unfinished façade carries two horizontal lines, three doorways, a statue of Saint Anthony, and a triangular pediment. Inside, six side chapels surround a domed space framed by ten semicircular arches.
The cloister remains the only surviving part of the original convent, with two storeys, Tuscan columns, moulded arches, and an upper balustrade. Panels above the church galleries show scenes from Saint Anthony’s life, while Saint Quiteria appears as both sculpture and painting. This layered setting now accommodates cultural uses, including art exhibitions and Christmas nativity displays.
