Nancy
Nancy is a kinetic sculpture by American artist Alexander Calder, created in 1971 and displayed in Palma, Mallorca, Spain. Its suspended forms move gently with the air around it. Calder lived from 1898 to 1976 and became known for inventing the mobile. Its abstract shapes hang in balance and move with the passing breeze.
Calder created the piece as a gift for Palma, encouraged by his friendship with Joan Miró. Miró and Calder first met in Paris in 1928. The work appeared at Sala Pelaires in 1972 before Palma accepted it on 14 February 1974. Madrid classified it as National Heritage, removing customs duties and special taxes.
Palma placed it in Hort del Rei gardens, where it remained from 1974 to 1985. Vandalism led to its restoration in 1994. Calder originally wanted Parc de Mar, between the cathedral and sea, to catch the sea breeze. Its garden setting near Palau de l’Almudaina places moving forms beside works by Miró.
