Can Marquès
Can Marquès is a historic manor house in Palma, where modernist details meet preserved interiors from earlier centuries. The house includes a seventeenth-century courtyard and an elaborate staircase. Alabaster columns, wrought-iron balustrades, and an indoor garden shape the route through its rooms. Original decoration offers a glimpse of upper-bourgeois life in Palma around 1900.
The building is documented from the fourteenth century and was renovated for Martí Marquès in 1906. Architect Francesc Roca i Simó introduced many of its modernist features during that work. Martí Marquès had made his fortune through coffee in Puerto Rico before returning to Mallorca as an indià. The interiors now frame contemporary installations and works by about thirty artists, including Joana Vasconcelos, Katie Paterson, and Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada.
This house museum brings private residence, hotel, and art space together beneath one roof. Some suites retain antique furnishings, Murano glass chandeliers, velvet sofas, and panelled walls. A rooftop terrace looks across Palma, while the imperial staircase remains one of the building’s clearest visual signatures.
