St. Margaretakirken
St. Margaretakirken stands in Maridalen, near the northern end of Lake Maridalsvannet in Oslo. Syenite walls outline this medieval stone church, built during the thirteenth century and dedicated to Margaret of Antioch.
The roof collapsed after the church fell into ruin by the seventeenth century, leaving the remains as Oslo’s best-preserved medieval building after Old Aker Church. Architect and archaeologist Gerhard Fischer led a restoration in 1934, stabilising the walls and preserving the structure. Archaeological research, architectural drawings and modern technology have also shaped reconstructions of its original form around 1250. Models and a three-dimensional film belong to an exhibition at Maridalen Bygdetun, while augmented reality projects explore the same lost interior.
Since 1974, the ruins have formed the natural stage for Maridalsspillet, an outdoor historical play trilogy by Carl Fredrik Engelstad. Floodlights installed by the Maridalen Rotary Club make the stonework visible after dark.
