Ormøy kirke
Ormøy kirke stands on a hill on Ormøya, surrounded by older villas in Oslo. Red log-built walls, pointed Gothic details and Swiss chalet forms shape the view.
Bernhard Christoph Steckmest designed the chapel, inaugurated in 1893 by Bishop Carl Peter Parelius Essendrop. Brown-stained, oiled wood gives the interior a warm setting for about 130 people. Two tower bells from 1892 carry the inscription “kapellet på ormøen”, while a 1931 wooden crucifix by Thorleif Sohlberg stands at the altar. The pulpit holds paintings of the Four Evangelists by Trygve Torkildsen, and a small eight-stop organ dates from 1924. Restoration in 2018 included removing the spire for safety, following the building’s transition from chapel to parish church in 1997.
A Colin Archer sailing-ship model, placed inside for the centenary in 1993, adds a distinctly local detail. The protected church also serves as a setting for weddings, baptisms, funerals and community gatherings.
