St.-Wolfgangs-Kapelle

St.-Wolfgangs-Kapelle stands in Ochsenfurt, Franconia, as a Catholic pilgrimage chapel with Gothic forms and a domed tower. Its east-facing choir has late-Gothic windows, fish-bladder tracery, and a ribbed vault. A dome and lantern replaced the original pointed spire.

Construction began in 1466, when historic pilgrimage routes linked Ochsenfurt with Wolfgangsee and Rome. Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg provides its dedication. Travellers from the Netherlands also passed through the town towards Wolfgangsee. Michel and Mathes Collenberger reshaped the tower in 1737 and 1738. Renovation from 1987 to 1989 renewed the building inside and out.

Three Baroque altars stand beside a Renaissance sandstone pulpit by Würzburg sculptor Peter Dell the Elder. The high altarpiece shows Wolfgang holding two church models. One model has a pointed spire, while the other carries the later dome. Paintings and sculptures include an Ochsenfurt view from 1623 and a late-Gothic figure from 1480. Wooden horseshoes beside the north entrance recall the horse blessings. Iron rings outside mark where horses were tied during the Pentecost rides.
