Pulverturm
Pulverturm stands at the southeastern corner of Ochsenfurt’s former city fortifications, within the Zwinger between two walls. Its square shape and steep hipped roof create a solid fourteenth-century silhouette. A small round tower stands in front, while the nearby moat completes the defensive setting. Stones outside mark the former position of a heavy portcullis.
First mentioned in 1397, the tower originally stored gunpowder and ammunition for Ochsenfurt’s defence. Two small prison cells later occupied its interior, where prisoners received food through a turning device. Its walls formed one section of a larger system that included the Klingentorturm, the Dicke Turm and the city wall. Today, the moat provides a setting for the Ochsenfest flea market and the German-French-Italian wine festival.
The listed monument preserves a clear picture of medieval urban protection and later civic life. Traces of the prisoners’ serving hatch remain, giving the massive stone structure an unexpectedly intimate detail.
