Stadtmauer
Stadtmauer in Nördlingen encircles the medieval old town with a continuous, walkable ring of walls, towers, gates, and covered sections. From the path, you can see historic rooftops on one side and the surrounding countryside on the other.
Construction began in the early fourteenth century under Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian, and the defensive circuit was complete around 1400. The fortifications include five gates, twelve towers, a bastion, and sections that protect you from rain or sun. Reimlinger Tor is the oldest gate, first mentioned in 1362, while Löpsinger Tor houses the Stadtmauermuseum with medieval defence artefacts.
In 1634, the fortifications withstood a siege during the Thirty Years’ War. Arrow slits still let children peer through the stonework, while nearby green spaces and playgrounds offer places to pause beside the historic circuit.
