La chaise de SAB

La chaise de SAB stands on Nice’s Promenade des Anglais as a three-metre blue chair beside the Mediterranean. Its form recalls the smaller blue chairs arranged along the seafront for views across the water. The vivid sculpture connects public art with an everyday feature of Nice’s coastline.

Sabine Géraudie began developing the idea in 2008, seeking a Nice image for happiness and the difficulty of reaching it. Her early design used two angled chairs. A figure reaching for the sun completed that first concept, shaped by Charles Tordo’s older chairs and Jean Michel Wilmotte’s 1990 versions. The finished work has stood along the promenade since autumn 2014.

Blue, yellow, green and red versions have appeared in pendants, chocolates and collectible figurines inspired by its shape. French industrial-property protection recognizes Géraudie’s original design. Photographs, postcards and reproductions carry its image beyond the seafront. At three metres high, the chair turns a familiar seaside seat into an unmistakable landmark.
