Gaston Leroux

In Nice, Gaston Leroux is connected with the final chapter of a life shaped by journalism, travel and fiction. He died here in April 1927. His final years unfolded in Nice, where he continued writing until his death. Before settling into fiction, he worked as a crime reporter and war correspondent, covering events including the Russian Revolution of 1905.

Those investigations supplied material for novels built around suspense, deduction and psychological detail. In 1907, Le Mystère de la Chambre Jaune introduced the amateur detective Joseph Rouletabille. The story became an early locked-room mystery, centred on a crime that seems impossible. In 1910, Le Fantôme de l’Opéra placed a mysterious figure beneath the Paris Opera House beside a young singer. Chéri-Bibi added another series, while later adaptations carried the opera story into films and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical.
