Église Saint-Sauveur
Église Saint-Sauveur stands in Nice’s Gairaut district, where a Catholic church has served the surrounding community since at least 1441. The façade carries 1628 on the fronton above the entrance and 1741 above the arcades.
Inside, the sanctuary dedicated to Notre-Dame de la Merci dates from 1696 and recalls prayers for prisoners’ release. François and André Romagnan donated to the chapel in 1654, while Jean-Louis Martin funded a feast-day morning mass. In 1772, Don Jean Garnier established chaplaincies for five rural churches around Nice, including Gairaut.
Local residents secured their own priest through an agreement in 1775, while accepting much of the church’s maintenance. The church became a parish seat in 1802 and entered France’s historical-monument protection in 1951. Those dates, together with the sanctuary, connect the building to Gairaut’s religious life and older fears of Barbary pirates.
