Église Saint-Nicolas et Sainte-Alexandra

Église Saint-Nicolas et Sainte-Alexandra stands in Nice as a Russian Orthodox church dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra and Saint Alexandra. Its façades rise in symmetrical levels, with rusticated stone, pediments, pilasters, and arched windows. A southern garden accompanies the building, protected as part of the historic monument since 1990. Inside, a double staircase leads from the ground floor to a Greek-cross church beneath an elliptical dome.

Empress Alexandra Feodorovna initiated the project for Russian visitors drawn to Nice by its mild winters and health resorts. Alexandre Koudinoff and André-François Barraya received responsibility for the project before Nice joined France. Consecrated in 1860, the church became the first Russian parish church in Western Europe. Its upper-floor arrangement reflects restrictions that allowed private chapels rather than distinct churches.

The iconostasis dominates the interior, presented by Alexandra Feodorovna and crafted in Saint Petersburg in 1858. Three registers hold icons of the Annunciation, the Evangelists, saints, and the Deesis. The upper register places Christ in majesty beside the Virgin, Saint John the Baptist, and the twelve apostles. Seventeenth-century icons of the Mother of God of Tolga and the Virgin of Vladimir remain among the interior’s treasures.
