Église de l'Annonciation

Église de l'Annonciation is a Baroque church in Nice, with origins reaching back to around 900. Its unfinished facade sets white marble against a plain wall, while a glazed, bulb-shaped dome crowns the bell tower.

The Carmelites rebuilt the church from 1610, completing most of the present structure between 1677 and 1685. Inside, a rectangular nave opens onto six chapels, a semicircular choir, and a bright dome above the colourful marble altar. Frescoes from the 1830s show Saint Peter’s deliverance, the Annunciation, and the Virgin of Mount Carmel giving Saint Simon Stock the scapular. Carved walnut doors from around 1845 stand beneath an Italian Tamburini organ.

A statue of Saint Rita entered the first side altar in 1934, strengthening the devotion that gives the church its local name, Sainte-Rita. The next chapel preserves its connection with fishermen, who once carried Saint Peter’s statue towards the sea to bless the waters.
