Chapelle de la Miséricorde

Chapelle de la Miséricorde stands in Nice’s old town, with a yellow façade matching the surrounding historic buildings. The Catholic chapel occupies the former site of the king of Sardinia’s salt warehouses. Built between 1747 and 1770, it reflects Piedmontese baroque design by Turin architect Bernardo Antonio Vittone.

Limited space placed the chapel beneath a convent, with round oculi marking the division between both structures. Inside, an elliptical nave surrounds four elliptical side chapels, creating a plan of repeated curves. Gold details, stucco decoration, and a blue-background dome fresco shape the interior’s most striking view.

The sacristy holds a Virgin of Mercy by J. Mirhalet and another attributed to Louis Bréa. Cracks appeared after a nearby underground parking project, prompting structural reinforcement between 2002 and 2003. The chapel has stood as a historic monument since 1921, and the stairs beside Cours Saleya offer a view across the entire building.
