памятник Цесаревичу Николаю Александровичу

The Monument to Tsesarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich stands behind the altar of Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Nice. The bronze-and-stone bust portrays Nicholas Alexandrovich Romanov as a young man. Alexander Nikolaevich Burganov created the sculpture for this setting, where Russian religious heritage meets the history of the French Riviera.

Installed in 2012, the memorial marked one hundred years since the cathedral’s consecration. The cathedral was completed in 1912 with support from Tsar Nicholas II and Nice’s Orthodox community. Nicholas Alexandrovich died in Nice during the nineteenth century, linking his memory to the city before this later memorial appeared.

Three years after his death, Villa Bermond received a memorial chapel, while the nearby street became Boulevard du Tzaréwitch. Russian aristocratic visitors helped establish cultural and religious institutions along the Riviera during the mid-nineteenth century. Behind the altar, bronze and stone connect one young Romanov’s memory with Nice’s enduring Russian presence.
