Winthirkirche
Winthirkirche stands in Munich’s Neuhausen district, a historic church whose Gothic origins reach back to the late fifteenth century. Parts of its original Gothic choir still survive.
The grave of the medieval itinerant preacher Winthir was incorporated into the church, giving locals the nickname Winthirkircherl. A fire destroyed the earlier building, while structural concerns later brought closure and partial rebuilding before the tower collapsed. That tower returned in a smaller form. Inside, a Baroque high altar from Bernhaupten stands beside sculptures made by Karl Killer.
On the west side, Karl Baur’s larger-than-life sculpture of the blessed Winthir creates the exterior’s strongest visual landmark. Winthir Cemetery remains a resting place for people connected with Munich’s history. Oskar von Miller, founder of the Deutsches Museum, is buried among them.
