Residenztheater
In Munich, Residenztheater, also called the New Residence Theatre, is a modern, wheelchair-accessible theatre building. Its predecessor occupied this site until the Second World War destroyed it. The replacement combines modern architecture with state-of-the-art facilities, excellent acoustics, and a versatile stage for varied theatrical performances.
Karl Hocheder designed the replacement, which rose between 1950 and 1951 after wartime destruction removed the earlier theatre. That earlier house had welcomed electors and kings since the mid-seventeenth century. Financial debates followed the post-war decision, but modern design and advanced facilities soon won public support. A major renovation followed between 1988 and 1991.
The main auditorium ceiling carries Fred Thieler's Nachthimmel, creating an impression of open sky above the seats. The resident company includes more than fifty actors. The company also performs at the nearby Cuvilliés Theatre and Marstall, both close to this building.
