Neues Rathaus
Neues Rathaus stands on the northern side of Marienplatz in Munich, serving as a neo-Gothic seat of city government. Georg von Hauberrisser designed it for Munich’s growing administration, and construction ran from 1867 to 1906. Its almost 100-metre facade carries statues and monuments that present Henry the Lion, the Wittelsbach dynasty, and Prince Regent Luitpold.
Above the square, an 85-metre tower carries the Münchner Kindl and houses the Rathaus-Glockenspiel, a mechanical clock with moving figures. Its scenes include the Schäfflertanz and a medieval knights’ tournament. The interior contains 400 rooms, including the mayor’s office and city council conference rooms, arranged around six courtyards.
The ground floor contains the Ratskeller restaurant and official tourist information centre. The design includes grimacing fountains and allegorical sculptures, and the building is wheelchair accessible.
