Leiber-Ehrenmal
Leiber-Ehrenmal stands in Munich’s Obergiesing district, within the historic Ostfriedhof cemetery. The memorial honours the Königlich Bayerisches Infanterie-Leib-Regiment, which served as the personal guard of Bavaria’s kings.
Royal decree formed the regiment on 16 July 1814 from selected soldiers drawn from Bavarian line infantry units. It later fought in the Austro-Prussian War and the Franco-Prussian War, before the fall of the Wittelsbach monarchy ended its royal service. An inscription honours members who died during the First World War.
The memorial connects a military unit with the individual soldiers who served in it. Its setting inside Ostfriedhof places Bavarian regimental history among the cemetery’s graves and monuments.
