Hofbrunnwerk

Hofbrunnwerk stands on the Hirschauterrasse beside the northern part of Munich’s Lower Hofgarten. This water-powered pump station uses the natural flow of Munich’s city streams. Built in 1562 under Duke Albrecht V, it supplied the garden and its fountains with water. Its location connects courtly landscaping with the city’s historic water engineering.

During the early seventeenth century, Maximilian I expanded the facility into a pump house with a water tower. The tower also supplied drinking water to the court and nearby urban areas. Nineteenth-century modernisation added Girard turbines, which still drive fountain water without electricity. After a temporary shutdown, the machinery returned to service during the conversion of the former Army Museum into the State Chancellery. The nearly five-hundred-year-old industrial monument remains wheelchair accessible.
