Feldherrnhalle
The Feldherrnhalle stands on Munich’s Odeonsplatz as a monumental loggia dedicated to Bavaria’s army. King Ludwig I of Bavaria commissioned the building. Friedrich von Gärtner designed it between 1841 and 1844, drawing inspiration from Florence’s Loggia dei Lanzi. Stone figures honour military leaders Tilly and Wrede. Ludwig Schwanthaler created the statues, connecting the monument’s military purpose with its artistic programme. Johann Tilly fought in the Thirty Years’ War. Karl Philipp von Wrede is associated with campaigns against Napoleon, while the Feldherrnhalle also carries Germany’s darker political history. The failed Beer Hall Putsch occurred here in 1923. During the Nazi era, an eastern-side memorial marked the site, before postwar restoration returned the structure to its original appearance. Two lions flank the loggia at Munich’s Odeonsplatz. Their Florentine model links Munich architecture with a recognisable Renaissance reference. The restored loggia serves as a meeting point for locals and visitors.
