Erlöserkirche

In Schwabing, Munich, the Erlöserkirche is the area’s oldest Lutheran church and a work of architectural history. Theodor Fischer designed its distinctive form for this Munich church. Its architecture combines historicist elements with Jugendstil and draws inspiration from classical basilicas. Structural clarity shapes the design throughout the church interior.

Inside, the central pulpit reflects the importance of preaching in Protestant worship, while a decorated apse frames the altar. Yellowish Verona marble marks the altar at the front. Above it, Linda Kögel’s large painting shows Jesus enthroned among angels, baptisms, weddings, funerals, and parish life. Portraits of congregation members appear within the artwork.

The church’s musical heritage includes an organ by G. F. Steinmeyer & Co. on the southern gallery, later expanded and refurbished. A Rieger organ joins it inside the church.
