St. Peter & Paul
St. Peter & Paul is a Catholic church in Mittenwald, standing at the end of Obermarkt, the town’s main pedestrian street. Its Baroque exterior appears restrained beside the colourful Lüftlmalerei on nearby buildings. Inside, ornate altars and detailed Baroque artwork fill the space with visual richness.
A cemetery beside the church brings together headstones from the nineteenth through the twenty-first centuries. Modern lettering stands alongside traditional Fraktur, while an ornamental iron gate separates the graves from the village centre. Metal name plates on the pews include examples dating to the late 1800s, linking worship today with earlier generations.
Mountains rise behind the churchyard, giving the setting its unmistakable Mittenwald character. On Christmas Eve, young women in traditional Bavarian clothing may place candles on relatives’ graves. Snow resting on the statues and headstones adds a quiet detail to this meeting place of faith, memory and local tradition.
