Mudec
Mudec, the Museo delle Culture, stands in Milan’s Porta Genova district on the former Ansaldo steelworks site. David Chipperfield shaped the building around contrasts between curved surfaces and geometric forms. A covered central square, the Agorà, connects the exhibition areas, Auditorium and Mudec Photo.
The museum opened in 2015 after Milan began transforming the disused industrial area into a multidisciplinary cultural centre in the early 1990s. More than 9,000 objects span art, crafts, everyday items, textiles and musical instruments from Africa, Asia and pre-Columbian civilisations. The permanent collection draws on extra-European holdings from Castello Sforzesco, gathered through explorations, religious missions and donations from Milanese noble families. Colonial contexts behind some acquisitions receive explicit attention, creating space for reflection and dialogue, while temporary exhibitions and cultural events extend the programme.
Look for the central Agorà, where the building’s curved and angular architecture meets beneath a roof. The site is wheelchair accessible, and its permanent collection is free to enter.
