Iglesia de Santa Ana

In Mexico, the Iglesia de Santa Ana presents a pale, raised façade beside pyramidal bell towers and an open atrium. Lime-plastered walls carry restrained painted decoration. Coloured glass windows cast patterns across the nave, while side chapels hold images of Mary Help of Christians. Another chapel honours the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The church occupies the remains of a Maya structure, linking colonial religious practice with an earlier built landscape. Antonio Figueroa initiated its construction. A garden tradition associates him with orange trees, while his remains rest inside the church after he died fighting corsairs. The atrium places a crucifix between statues of Saint Anne. Beneath the building, a small basement annex contains stacked skulls and bones from parishioners buried in the church floor. Latin letters above the entrance announce the Word made flesh. Santa Ana also records the social history of artisans and labourers, while the nearby park recalls a battle between Republican and Imperial forces. The church became a parish during the colonial era.
