Pulverturm
Pulverturm is the last surviving part of Ortenstein Castle, rising above Meran beside the parish church. A rocky outcrop places the tower directly above the old town.
Ortenstein Castle once housed the Tyrolean burgraves before most of the complex disappeared during the sixteenth century. The surviving keep stored gunpowder during the Thirty Years’ War, giving it its lasting name. Two towers built inside each other strengthened its defences, while northern remains mark the former ditches. Today, a modern staircase reaches a viewing platform about twenty metres above ground.
From there, you can see Meran, the Etsch Valley, the Burggrafenamt, and villages including Lana and Schenna. Old city walls remain visible near the Passeirer Tor. The tower also stands along the Tappeinerweg, a gravel walking route from Gratsch with benches, cafés, and broad views. The tower itself requires stairs, so access is not barrier-free.
