Le Trabuquet
Le Trabuquet is a cemetery in Menton, France, where civilian graves stand alongside military sections linked to the First World War. Four plots, the Carrés de la Marne, Verdun, Champagne, and d’Orient, hold rows of matching headstones for soldiers from French colonial territories.
The Carré de Champagne contains the Mémorial du Tirailleur de Menton, inaugurated in 2012 with a life-size bronze statue by Joël Vergne. A historical mural traces the Tirailleurs Sénégalais through battles including Verdun, Champagne, and the defense of Reims, while memorial plaques list 1,137 soldiers who died in Menton during the war. Crosses mark Christian graves, while crescents and five-pointed stars mark Muslim graves.
Beyond these sections, older and newer civilian monuments show photographs, handmade flower pots, and even garden gnomes. A columbarium and an ash-scattering garden add newer forms of remembrance to this cemetery’s military and family histories.
