Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange

Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange stands in Menton's historic centre as a Catholic minor basilica and parish church. Three naves shape the basilical plan inside. Baroque lines organise the façade, where eight paired Corinthian columns support a heavy cornice. Three doors open beneath statues of Saint Michael, Saint Maurice, and Saint Roch.

Prince Honoré II of Monaco proposed the church, and Lorenzo Lavagna laid its first stone in 1619. Work began in 1639, and worship started in 1653. Emmanuel Cantone added the western Campanin between 1701 and 1703, raising its watchtower-like bell tower fifty-three metres. An eastern Clock Tower preserves a fifteenth-century square base. The present façade, completed in 1819, recalls seventeenth-century baroque design.

Inside, small vault windows cast light across an eighteenth-century polychrome marble altar and Saint Michael's 1820 statue. An Italian-style organ case from 1666 stands behind the altar. Chapels hold works linked to Menton, Monaco, and Genoa, including paintings by Antoine Manchello and Jean-Augustin Vento. One processional cross rests on a Turkish lance from Lepanto in 1571.
