Bettelturm
Bettelturm rises in Memmingen as a round brick bastion tower from the city’s medieval fortifications. Built in 1471 during the final expansion, it guarded the eastern gate, known as the Einlass, and the adjoining moat. Its flattened rear entrance carries simple half-timbering, while the tiled roof narrows upward into a small weather vane.
The tower has served changing community needs: it became a poorhouse in the nineteenth century and now houses the swimming department of TV Memmingen. Among Memmingen’s surviving defences, it is the only remaining round cannon tower with its original 1471 roof structure. Its compact silhouette still connects the city’s modern life with the work of medieval fortification.
