Sankt Johannes kyrka

In Sweden, Sankt Johannes kyrka rises in red brick, with soft Jugend curves and an enamel-tiled roof. Nearly twenty natural stones shape its ornaments and granite base.

Axel Anderberg designed the church during rapid urban growth. Construction ran from 1903 to 1907, and Bishop Gottfrid Billing inaugurated it in 1907. The northern tower stands beside the sanctuary, challenging the customary western placement and changing the building’s relationship with light, sound and street. Inside, an oak pulpit carved by Carl Andersson presents five scenes from Christ’s life. Worship, concerts, exhibitions and pilgrim walks into the nearby park all give the interior different kinds of life.

A phased facade renovation began in 2023, while tower work continued into 2024. Touch the cool granite, then listen for the organ beneath the carved oak.
