Sankt Andreas kyrka
Sankt Andreas kyrka opened in Sweden in 1959 as the country's first new parish church since 1907. Architects Thorsten Roos and Bror Thornberg pared the building down to planes and angles, with no curve to soften the outline. Walls of warm Borghamn limestone, cut with visible transverse saw marks, catch the daylight in a dry, almost Mediterranean way. In late afternoon the façade glows like sun on a Roman wall, and a slim campanile climbs forty-one metres above it, carrying eight bells.
The plan borrows the proportions of a Roman basilica, its length, width and height echoing the measures of Solomon's temple. Twentieth-century art commands the interior rather than decorating it. A glass section by Jan Brazda sits beside chapel windows by Erik Höglund. In the choir, a fresco by Nils Aron Berge traces Saint Andrew's life like a short painted sermon. In the chancel, Thure Thörn's carved crucifix shows Christ with a crown of victory, an image meant to comfort and to unsettle.
Lower wings surround the nave and hold meeting rooms, choir spaces and community facilities. The church lives as much through weekday concerts, pilgrim walks and conversation groups as through its services. Renovation work has since renewed the campanile and adapted the rooms for present-day use, yet the clear lines and quiet stone remain unchanged. Look back once at the limestone grain and listen to how the nave carries sound: that rough, warm stone is the detail that stays with you.
