Passage

Passage is a public sculpture in Sweden by Maha Mustafa, set in a square near a concert hall. Two red steel spirals twist together, rising about eight metres and casting sharp shadows as sunlight moves across their surfaces.

Three elements shape the work: the spirals, a twenty-five-metre black granite bench, and a circular fountain about eight metres wide. The bench curves like rows of orchestra seats, with a coastline engraved along its face, while the water adds a steady sound to the space. Conceived as an exterior response to the nearby concert hall, the sculpture evokes musical rhythm through pauses, movement and crescendos. Buildings appear through the coils, and people join the composition when they sit or walk between them.

The engraved coastline offers the smallest detail: a map in the stone that you can trace with your fingertip before continuing through the red spirals.
