Teatro Cervantes

Teatro Cervantes stands in Málaga as one of the city’s oldest performance venues, opening in 1870 after fire destroyed the Teatro del Príncipe Alfonso. Gerónimo Cuervo designed its polygonal structure, whose rectangular stage accommodates large-scale productions.

Inside, a spacious lobby leads to the horseshoe-shaped patio de butacas, surrounded by four levels with a platea, two tiers of boxes and a paradise level. Walls, pillars and cast-iron columns support richly decorated interiors, while the proscenium and box fronts carry Cuervo’s detailed ornament. Opera, music, theatre and dance fill the programme, and the theatre serves as the main venue for the Málaga Film Festival.

Above the seating area, Bernardo Ferrándiz and his collaborators created the 1870 oil painting Alegoría de la Historia, Industria y Comercio de Málaga. The scene presents nineteenth-century Málaga through its industry, commerce and port, giving the auditorium a vivid link to the city outside.
