Espacios para Desaparecer

Espacios para Desaparecer is a sculptural intervention by Joaquín Ivars in Málaga, set on a triangular garden island along Avenida de la Aurora. Fourteen horizontal Capri limestone slabs lie in pairs among tall palms and ficus, while high-rise buildings and commercial traffic surround the open space.

Málaga’s city council commissioned the site-specific work for this dense urban setting, where its horizontal arrangement preserves a visible architectural void. White stone from Macael and bronze connect regional material history with ideas of boundaries, solitude, immigration, marginalisation and social cooperation. The form also recalls a cemetery, while its low profile allows people to sit or rest among the stones.

Each slab measures 180 by 90 by 25 centimetres, and bronze sandals once formed bridges between them. Those sandals have since been removed, and vandalism has marked the installation, yet the limestone pairs still leave a striking gap within the busy city.
