Convento de San Andrés

Convento de San Andrés stands in Málaga’s El Perchel neighbourhood as a historic complex founded by the Discalced Carmelites in the sixteenth century. Built on an earlier hermitage dedicated to Saint Andrew, it includes the adjoining Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen.

Across the centuries, the buildings served as a cloistered convent, hospital and barracks for local and enemy troops. In 1831, the convent held liberal general José María Torrijos and forty-nine companions before their execution. The Carmelites lost the property during the Mendizábal Disentailment in 1836 and returned to Málaga only in 1943.

Traditional techniques restored the complex between 2016 and 2022, recovering its original form after years of decline. Today, the 3,117-square-metre site contains the Jorge Guillén public library, the Torrijos Association and the Archconfraternity of Nuestra Señora del Carmen. A permanent exhibition traces the convent’s history and restoration, while the project received recognition in the 2022 Andalucía Architecture Awards.
