Telehaus
Telehaus stands on the south side of Münsterplatz in Mainz, where Schillerstraße meets the square. Its pale plaster façade presents a height-tiered, cubic composition shaped by modernism in the 1920s. Dark-painted window crosses and restrained ground-floor clinker and shell-limestone cladding define the street elevations.
Built between 1928 and 1930, the complex rose beside the Mainz-Mitte tax office near baroque Erthaler Hof. The site occupied the former Altmünster monastery and required foundations five to seven metres deep. Reinforced concrete supports the angular six-and-a-half and four-storey structures, while light partition walls allowed flexible interiors. Two independent authorities operated within this shared building structure. An air raid in 1945 burned out every floor, and restoration returned the building and its technical equipment to full use by 1950.
Telecommunications facilities, offices and a Telekom shop occupy the structure. Its walkable flat roof crowns interiors that once combined oak stair strips, linoleum floors, plywood doors and iron frames. The original façade carried the inscription “TELEGRAPHENAMT” beneath a stylised Reich eagle.
