Schoppenstecher

Schoppenstecher stands at the edge of Schillerplatz in Mainz, between Schönborner Hof and the Proviant-Magazin. Its setting is the former garden of Schönborner Hof. The figure holds a cylindrical Mainzer Stange wine glass in its right hand. You see a dedicated local wine drinker, not a ruler or saint.

The character expresses the humour and sociability of evenings spent in Mainz taverns. The statue comes from Heinz Schaubach, a porcelain manufacturer and member of the city’s wine guild. His gift to Mainz marks the city’s two-thousandth anniversary in 1962. That raised glass connects wine with the joie de vivre associated with Mainz.

The figure also appears among the traditional Mainz characters on the city’s Christmas market pyramid. A miniature replica honours special services to Rheinhessen wine, in an award tradition begun in 1973. Visitors photograph it as readily as Mainz Cathedral and the Fastnachtsbrunnen. At its base, an information plaque from the Mainz Narren-Club fills in the story as you stand beside him.
