Gedenkstätte St. Christoph

Gedenkstätte St. Christoph stands in Mainz as a memorial and former parish church, shaped by medieval construction and wartime destruction. Its early Gothic walls rose between 1292 and 1325. Today, the preserved ruins form a chapel and remembrance site with wheelchair access, modern reliefs, and an exhibition inside the former church.

Heavy bombing during the Second World War almost destroyed the church, leaving its damaged structure at the centre of Mainz’s history. Restoration between 1963 and 1964 created the memorial chapel, while later work renewed the tower and surrounding grounds. Colourful glass panels trace St. Christoph’s story and examine National Socialism and the war in Mainz. Historical photographs show the city’s extensive destruction by the war’s end.

A late Gothic baptismal font stands among the ruins, traditionally associated with Johannes Gutenberg’s baptism. The tower silhouette gained a contemporary form through a 2018 design competition won by Bonn Architekten. Fire-galvanised, colour-coated angle profiles shape the new tower helm, which acknowledges the missing wartime spire. Heinz Hemrich’s reliefs add a modern visual layer to this place of remembrance.
