Alte Universität
Alte Universität rises in Mainz as a Renaissance building with a four-storey facade and a relatively restrained appearance. Two decorated portals mark the ground floor.
Jesuit builders created it between 1615 and 1618 for a Latin school and the theological and philosophical faculties. After the Jesuit order ended, the building became Mainz’s central university building in 1781. Fires and bombing left the massive outer walls and Renaissance portals standing, while reconstruction restored the roof in 2005. Today, the Leibniz Institute for European History uses the building as a research centre with a library, fellows’ residence and conference room. Two rows of dormer windows and two roof spires complete the view.
