87er Denkmal

The 87er Denkmal stands on Windmühlenberg in Mainz, a former mill area during the nineteenth century. Its setting connects military history with the city's earlier role as a fortress and garrison town.

The 87th (1st Nassau) Infantry Regiment formed in 1809 within the 41st Infantry Brigade and 21st Division. Battle years and locations include Spain around 1810 and France during the First World War. Dark-green uniforms carried yellow baldrics for soldiers, while officers wore white ones.

The Nassau lion marks the stone above its service record. The inscription traces the regiment's service from 1809 to 1945 without serving as a memorial to the fallen. Many soldiers leaving Mainz during the Franco-Prussian War and the world wars did not return, a loss remembered in a song by Mainz veterans from 1844.
