GOGGS
GOGGS, or Government Offices Great George Street, is a Grade II* listed government building in London beside Whitehall. Its exterior is clad in pale Portland stone. The island site occupies the ground between Parliament Street, Great George Street, Horse Guards Road, and King Charles Street. A circular court echoes Jones’s unbuilt Whitehall Palace design.
John Brydon designed the building, which took shape in two phases between 1898 and 1917. The Whitehall phase finished in 1908. After Brydon died, Sir Henry Tanner completed the work, leaving visible differences in the final design. HM Treasury moved its headquarters here in 1940. During the Second World War, the reinforced basement held a map room, Churchill’s staff, and teams planning D-Day operations. Filtered vents helped guard the basement against poison gas. A thick concrete slab and a torpedo net protected the basement from bombs.
