Turm II (Beatrix)
Turm II (Beatrix) stands at the Pöstlingberg fort in Linz, Austria, within the former Maximilianische Turmlinie. Thick stone walls, earthworks and a surrounding moat reveal the defensive architecture of this hilltop stronghold. Two large towers, three smaller towers and a gatehouse once formed the fort.
Construction of the tower line began in 1831 under Archduke Maximilian Joseph of Austria-Este. The system placed separate towers around Linz so neighbouring positions could support one another with artillery fire. Three rings of walls enclosed underground living quarters and storage rooms, while a drawbridge guarded the rear entrance.
The military abandoned the fortifications in 1858 as newer cannons reached farther and struck harder. Turm II now houses the Grottenbahn, a miniature railway and fairy-tale attraction inside this former military structure. Nearby, Turm IV serves as the Pöstlingbergbahn terminus, while Turm V offers an observation terrace.
