Pfarrkirche Urfahr
Pfarrkirche Urfahr is a Roman Catholic parish church raised above the Danube in Linz’s Urfahr district. Ars Electronica Center stands beside it, while the simple single-nave interior carries a barrel vault, a lower choir and a south-side baptismal chapel.
Capuchins built the monastery church between 1690 and 1694, and the building became Urfahr’s parish church in 1784. Franz Xaver Martinelli’s Baroque-Classical façade and tower followed between 1791 and 1793, with the tower gaining an onion dome and lantern after a fire in 1833. Inside, a 1654 altar came from the demolished Franz-Xaver Chapel, while Johann Karl von Reslfeld’s 1694 altarpiece shows the Holy Family. Since 2015, mobile seating and the youth church Der Grüne Anker have opened the space to programmes for young people aged 14 to 24.
Facing the Danube, Rudolf Gruber’s 1970 Saint Nicholas sgraffito measures seven by eight metres. The saint holds a book and golden balls while standing on a stylised boat, with Latin and Church Slavonic inscriptions asking for his prayers.
