Spinnerei archiv massiv occupies the oldest building in Leipzig’s former cotton spinning mill complex, the Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei. Inside, an exhibition space and visitor centre connect industrial heritage with the site’s contemporary artistic life.
Bertram Schultze founded the space in 2004, and it expanded in 2007. A permanent exhibition traces more than 125 years of spinning-mill history, from industrial growth to the transformation into a cultural centre. Photographic “image archives” follow changes in the buildings and the people who use them. Temporary exhibitions, including New Perspectives – Leipzig Meets Cracow, add artistic exchanges to that historical view.
The surrounding complex now contains more than 100 artist studios, 14 galleries, workshops, print shops, a cinema and the Residenz theatre venue. Since 2008, the centre has also presented products made in workshops across the former mill, placing everyday creative work beside photographs of the site’s changing past.
